General post office: We the post office

Release date: November 15th, 2020

General Post Office released their debut album “We the Post Office” on Smeik in the middle of November 2020. This group is a fresh contribution to the Norwegian jazz scene and provides us with energetic free jazz with a huge dash of blues.

Despite the fact that the group hasn’t existed for too long, General Post Office has gotten a proper fan base, received great reviews and been on tours both in and out of Norway. They have also been a part of “Framtida i norsk jazz” [The future of Norwegian jazz] organized by Norsk Jazzforum [The Norwegian Jazz Forum].

The group consists of young and talented musicans from the jazz communities of Bergen and Oslo:

Aksel Øvreås Røed - Saxophone

Isach Skeidsvoll - Piano

Torkil Hjelle - Double bass

Sigurd Steinkopf - Drums

Isach Skeidsvoll is the creater behind most of the music, but the album also presents contributions by Torkill Hjelle. The compositions are strongly imspired by free jazz pioneers such as Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and Art Ensemble of Chicago, but also the great blues heroes Robert Johnson and Howlin Wolf. Throughout the album, the music quickly moves from simple and melodic themes to powerful and unpolished free jazz.

After the band met at the Grieg Academy in Bergen in 2017, they have in just a few years gotten great reviews from Norwegian and international press. We expect this to continue after their debut album is released.

Feel free to read a little about their music in this Jazzwise post or check out an excerpt from their concert with Jazz i Sikte [Jazz in Sight].

The album is available on CD and vinyl. If you want to buy it, just fill out the form under and the artist will contact you shortly. It is also available in digital format from the services you usually use, such as Amazon.
